U.N. urges world to protect civilians in Syria (Reuters)

AMMAN (Reuters) ? Syrian forces shot dead at least six people protesting against President Bashar al-Assad on Friday, activists said, and the United Nations called for international protection for civilians from a crackdown it said could lead to civil war.

Friday's shootings, near Aleppo and in suburbs of Damascus, occurred as protesters took to the streets after weekly Muslim prayers, as they have done many times since Syria's uprising began in March, inspired by popular revolts that have ousted three Arab leaders this year.

In the eastern city of Qamishli, near the Turkish border, 20,000 people marched to honor Kurdish activist Mishaal al-Tammo, who was killed a week ago.

The United Nations said the death toll from the unrest had reached 3,000, including at least 187 children. Its human rights chief demanded that the world act to stop the carnage.

"The onus is on all members of the international community to take protective action in a collective manner, before the continual ruthless repression and killings drive the country into a full-blown civil war," U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said in a statement.

"As more members of the military refuse to attack civilians and change sides, the crisis is already showing worrying signs of descending into an armed struggle," she added.

At least 100 people had been killed in the last 10 days alone, she said.

Clashes between soldiers and suspected army deserters in the northern province of Idlib and the southern province of Deraa killed at least 35 people on Thursday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Ten civilians were killed in crossfire in the northern town of Binish, the group said, but most of the other fatalities were soldiers, reflecting the growth of armed opposition to Assad's rule and rising casualties among his security forces.

Syria blames the violence on foreign-backed armed groups who it says have killed 1,100 soldiers and police. Assad was quoted by state media this week as saying Syria had "passed the most difficult stage" of the uprising.

Authorities have barred most foreign media from Syria, making it hard to verify accounts by the government or its foes.

SANCTIONS TIGHTENED

Despite his confident comments, Assad faces growing regional pressure. Neighboring Turkey, a former close ally, says it will impose sanctions on Damascus. Gulf Arab states have called for an Arab League meeting to discuss the "dire" situation in Syria.

The United States and Europe have embargoed Syrian oil exports and penalized several businesses, including the largest state bank, Commercial Bank of Syria, a move which economists say is likely to restrict Syria's trade finance.

They also sought a United Nations resolution that could pave the way for U.N. sanctions, but China and Russia blocked it.

Pillay stopped short of urging the U.N. Security Council to authorize the use of military force to protect Syrian civilians.

Asked what kind of action should be taken, her spokesman Rupert Colville said it was for countries to decide, but added: "What has been done so far is not producing results, and people continue to be killed virtually every single day."

Several thousand people marched on Friday in the town of Hirak in the southern Hauran plain, the first region where Assad used tanks and troops to try to crush the uprising early on.

"There is renewed optimism that the regime's days are numbered. We are seeing more army defections, economic sanctions biting, the West keeping up pressure and more movement from Arab countries," said Mohammad al-Arabi, an activist in Hirak, who cited last week's defection of a senior intelligence officer.

In Homs, video footage showed thousands rally in the Khalidiya district, shouting "Syria is destined for freedom."

Sectarian tension between majority Sunnis and minority Alawites has surfaced in the city, and armed resistance to Assad's rule has spread in the countryside nearby.

Another Bonus iOS 5 App: Airport Utility [Ios Apps]

Another Bonus iOS 5 App: Airport UtilityControlling your wireless network no longer requires a computer. Apple's dropped another app surprise this morning: an iOS Airport Utility. Change your passwords, reset your routers, update firmware?all in your hand. This computer-less computing thing is fun.

The app's iOS 5-only, and you can either download it straight from iTunes, or find it buried within your device's settings, as 9to5Mac found:

To download the app, access Settings on your iOS device, go to your WiFi setting, tap the little blue arrow next to the currently active network and then hit the Manage This Network button at the bottom of the sheet.

The app also gives you a very pretty little visualization of your entire network?something the desktop client's totally lacking, and which not only looks nice, but can be helpful for those of you managing larger setups. Neat! [9to5Mac]

Celebrity Apprentice Cast Revealed

The new cast for the Celebrity Apprentice has been revealed and I have to admit, I am actually excited about this one! Usually I am like, whatever ? these aren?t celebs. And though you may still say that, this time around the Donald has chosen some feisty players that are sure to make things interesting. American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken, Victoria Gotti, Teresa Giudice, and Debbie Gibson are all confirmed while Aubrey O’Day and Adam Carolla are also rumored. Some other ?celebrities? include, Cheryl Tiegs and Marco Andretti. Who? So I can just picture Victoria and Teresa butting heads and going at it, which in itself will be worth watching. Teresa always puts her foot in her mouth and seems to make enemies wherever she goes, and I am willing to bet a game as intense as Celebrity Apprentice will add fuel to that fire. Then add Aubrey O?Day to that concoction and you have one huge, ridiculous cat fight on your hands. No one will be able to tell you what it is about, but they will be able tot ell you what the other person did/said to make them wrong! Guess Teresa is willing to spend more time [...]

The History of Skateboarding (Infographic)

Skateboarding has had one of the most unique and and turbulent histories of any sport (or hobby) in the history of North America.

The sport has gone from grass root home-made boards, to being one of the most popular sports in the USA, only to crash into oblivion before resurfacing as a past time for punks and kids up to no good. Despite the changing point of view of popular opinion, the sport has held a core of devotees who kept the sport alive when it seemed all but forgotten.

These days it?s the same devotees who are working hard to keep the sport pure, desperately trying to steer the future of boarding away from clutches of the politically correct mass manufacturing power of big business. Perhaps one of the most important figures in the current history of skateboarding is a relatively unknown guy by the name of P.D.

P.D. started, owns and still runs the now infamous skateboard company Skull Skates. Skull Skates, from day one, has been making boards for the serious boarders helping to push and progress the sport to where it is today. They?re noted as having released one of the very first ?double kick? boards, and became one of the first companies to adopt the current ?popsicle stick? board design.

The fast majority of the board images used in this infographic come from the Skull Skates skateboard museum, P.D?s personal collection of historic boards. While he has no idea I stole all of his pictures, I can?t thank him enough for putting them online.

If you enjoy this infographic, please take some time to take a look at the Skull Skates webpage, and maybe even buy yourself a new deck.

Musings after the death of my grandmother | Intersections

Written By Shannon Salisbury

I just returned from a trip home to Ottawa for the holiday long weekend. This was the first time I?d been home since my grandmother?s funeral in June, and it was ? different. My mom, in particular, has changed. She seemed lighter this weekend, much less tired. Her face was less pinched, and her body language was much more open. She was more relaxed than I?ve seen in several years. Younger, even.

My mother had been the primary caregiver for my grandmother these last few years. She did everything she could to ensure that Grandma lived as independently as possible right to the end. Grandma lived alone in her own apartment in a condo building until she was 94, and my mom was the reason this was possible. She was there several times a week to make sure Grandma got out of the house to run her own errands. She found a family doctor willing to make house calls to reduce the walking strain on her knees. One of my aunts also provided a significant amount of care, and between the two of them, Grandma was well cared for, and lived with dignity. She lived all but the last 9 months of her life independently, and was still sharp as a tack and doing whatever she could for herself in a nursing home until the week before she died. She even went to the local casino two days before the heart attack that hastened her death.

And that?s great. But Grandma dying at 94 means that her children are in their 60s, and dealing with their own health and aging issues. The reality of our aging population is that traditions of adult children caring for their elderly parents are becoming a lot more complicated. As the adult child of parents who may need the kind of support my mother spent years offering my grandmother, it?s time for me to start thinking about what that?s going to look like. How do you care for aging parents? How do you care for yourselves at the same time?

FDA warns Bristol's leukemia drug may raise lung risks (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Health regulators warned on Tuesday that Bristol-Myers Squibb Co's leukemia drug Sprycel may raise the risk of a rare, but serious condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs.

The condition, known as pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), makes the heart work harder to pump blood into the lungs. Over time, the overworked heart muscle may become weak and lose its ability to pump enough blood through the lungs.

Sprycel was initially approved in the United States in June 2006. Since approval, cases of PAH have been identified in Bristol-Myers' global pharmacovigilance database. No fatalities from the condition have been reported, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on its website.

Twelve cases of PAH from the manufacturer's database were confirmed, and Sprycel was identified as the most likely cause, FDA said.

FDA said that if PAH is confirmed in a patient, Sprycel should be permanently discontinued.
