A Better Breast Cancer Detector? - in Los Alamitos-Seal Beach Patch

By Dr. Charles Hough

A comfortable, accurate, no-squishing breast exam? Sounds like a contradiction in terms, doesn?t it? But what if there really were a precise, painless, FDA-approved exam that could detect breast cancer earlier than ever, that was safe and radiation-free?and that gave test results instantly, rather than making you wait in suspense for days on end?

Guess what? That exam now exists. It?s called Digital Palpation Imaging and it is even more sensitive and accurate than the human touch?which itself has proved to play a critical role in cancer screenings. Digital Palpation Imaging uses a portable hand-held tactile sensing device that can detect lesions in the breast as small as 5 mm.

Renowned breast surgeon Dr. Cary Kaufman of Bellingham Regional Breast Center in Washington State says it ?provides consistency, accuracy, documentation, and predictability, taking it to the next threshold in the field of breast clinical exams.?

So why am I betting you?ve never heard of it? Why is my center, OC Breast Wellness, one of only eight locations in the United States to provide this potentially life-saving service today?

This is one of the great mysteries of modern medicine: the reluctance to accept new wisdom and adopt new technologies that can improve, and even save, people?s lives.

The most successful cancer screening technology ever developed was the Pap smear. First developed by Dr. George N. Papanicolaou in 1928, the pap smear didn?t become a mainstream test until 20 years later. Yet today it?s widely acknowledged that the use of pap smears has reduced the incidence of cervical cancer deaths by a whopping 70 percent. So what took so long?

Author and physician Siddhartha Mukherjee, in his book The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, notes that even after decades of research on lung cancer?during which time researchers managed to overcome the overwhelming skepticism of the public and doctors that cigarette smoking contributed to it??It remains an astonishing, disturbing fact that in America?one of the most potent and common carcinogens known to humans can be freely bought and sold at every corner store for a few dollars.?

What does it take to get through to people?

Today, breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women in their 40s. American women have a 1 in 8 lifetime risk of acquiring this dreaded disease. The current medical model for detecting breast cancer in women, mammography (which exposes women to 20 times as much radiation as a chest x-ray), has not been successful at changing these dire statistics in 40 years. Yet it?s still the No. 1 recommended screening tool.

We see women in my office every day who are?understandably?scared to death of breast cancer. We give them information on ways to prevent cancer through diet, vitamins, exercise and lifestyle choices. Our nurses perform breast exams and screenings. Why on earth would we want to wait 20 years before helping save their lives?

Digital palpation imaging is here today and I?m using it for the benefit of my patients. I hope more doctors across America will join me.

Brees passes Unitas, Saints win

QB connects for TD in 48th consecutive game, New Orleans (1-4) wins 31-24

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:38 p.m. ET Oct. 7, 2012

NEW ORLEANS - Drew Brees got suspended coach Sean Payton in the building, broke a prestigious NFL passing record and led New Orleans to a desperately needed first win of the season.

For one memorable night, at least, the entire beleaguered Saints organization and its frustrated fans could celebrate a special moment in football history and recapture that winning feeling that had become commonplace before an offseason overshadowed by the NFL's bounty investigation.

Brees broke Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas' half-century-old record by throwing a touchdown pass in his 48th straight game, and the Saints defeated the San Diego Chargers 31-24 on Sunday night.

"I guess you really couldn't have written a better script for tonight," Brees said. "To break the record, to get the win, and the fashion in which we won ? really a complete team effort all the way around.

"The amazing thing about a record like this is it spans over the course of four seasons and hopefully we can keep it going to for a while," Brees said. "There are so many people that are a part of this."

Brees' 40-yard pass to Devery Henderson eclipsed the mark of 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass Unitas set from 1956-60.

Brees said he was honored and humbled to break a record by a player he saw as a pioneer who stood for "everything that's great in this league."

Brees finished with four touchdown passes, including three to Marques Colston, giving the seventh-year receiver a franchise-record 52 TD catches with the Saints (1-4).

At Brees' request, the NFL allowed Payton, assistant head coach Joe Vitt and general manager Mickey Loomis ? all serving various suspensions in connection with the NFL's bounty investigation ? to attend the game. They and Unitas' son, Joe, saw Brees pass for 370 yards, enough to put Brees over 30,000 yards passing as a Saint in his 100th game with the club.

Afterward, Brees took an elevator near the Saints' locker room up to the Superdome's suite level to share a few moments with Payton, Loomis and Vitt.

"It gave us a good mojo for sure," Brees said of Payton's presence. "I love my coach, so glad he could be here. Mickey and Joe Vitt as well. It is special for our team, special they could be a part of this record."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the one who suspended Saints personnel in the bounty matter but also granted Brees' request for Payton, Vitt and Loomis to attend the game, chimed in on his Twitter page shortly after the record fell, writing, "Congrats to (at)drewbrees & his teammates on breaking Unitas' record. Amazing accomplishment by great QB & leader. We're proud of you, Drew."

Philip Rivers passed for 354 yards and two touchdowns to former Saint Robert Meachem, but had two costly turnovers in the final quarter.

"I can't tell you how tough it is to lose a game like this," Rivers said. "We were right there. We were up by 10 points and just didn't get it done. We have a great team, a championship caliber team. But we have to win close games like this."

The first late turnover was Roman Harper's interception and 41-yard return on a pass tipped by fellow safety Malcolm Jenkins. That set up the Saints' final score on Garrett Hartley's field goal. San Diego (3-2) still had a chance to tie in the final minute until defensive end Martez Wilson stripped Rivers and recovered the fumble to seal the victory.

The Saints' defense, which entered the game ranked least in the league, had a hand in the victory not only with the turnovers but five sacks.

"You really have to credit our defense getting pressure on the quarterback," Interim head coach Aaron Kromer said. "That's what made a difference in the game."

After his record-setting completion, Brees trotted to the end zone to hug Henderson. The rest of New Orleans' offense pursued and swarmed around Brees in celebration while the jubilant Superdome crowd roared and then howled an elongated, "Dreeeeeeew!"

Brees took the game ball to the sideline where he continued to accept congratulations. The scoring pass capped an 80-yard drive in which Brees completed all three of his third-down passes, including the touchdown.

Colston finished with nine catches for 131 yards, while Henderson had eight catches for 123 yards.

Colston's second TD late in the third quarter eclipsed a franchise mark set by Joe Horn in 2006 and pulled the Saints back within a field goal shortly after the Chargers appeared to have gone ahead 31-14 on Demorrio Williams' interception return for a touchdown. Williams' TD was nullified, however, by Melvin Ingram's late hit on Brees' chin, which drew a roughing-the-passer flag and extended what wound up to be an 87-yard scoring drive.

"Obviously it was a critical play," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "You can't make those kinds of errors, and we will learn from them."

Vitt is expected to take over the coaching staff when his six-game suspension ends. Loomis was docked eight games. As the Saints headed into their bye week, the desperately needed win offered hope, however faint, of making a run for a fourth-straight playoff appearance when Vitt and Loomis are back.

Colston made his first touchdown catch on a pass Brees lofted perfectly to the back of the end zone. That gave New Orleans a 14-10 lead that lasted until Meachem's 44-yard touchdown catch in the final minute of the half.

San Diego went ahead 24-14 on Ryan Mathews' 13-yard run around left end, capping a three-play drive that started when Henderson tipped a pass that Brees threw behind him, allowing Quentin Jammer to intercept it and give San Diego the ball on the New Orleans 25.

10 Pairs Of Women's Boots That Are As Comfortable As Uggs (PHOTOS)

Uggs are like wearing clouds on your feet. They're as comfortable as slippers and as warm as duvets, but they can resemble something you'd pair with a terry-cloth robe. As the temperature drops and you find yourself yearning to put on your fluffy Uggs, you should know that there are other options that will keep your feet toasty and ensure you look polished.

Rainboots are a great option for both style and comfort. Not only are they waterproof, but they come in hundreds of colors and shapes so it's easy to find a pair that is appropriate for almost any occasion. Motorcycle boots are another great choice. These flat boots are perfect if you're on the go, sturdy enough to walk through puddles and, best of all, the leather softens over time, making them more comfortable with every wear. Suede boots can be another great alternative as the flexible fabric moulds to your feet quicker than ordinary leather. If you're adamant about wearing boots with a lining, many fall and winter styles provide fur or faux-fur interiors to cushion your tootsies (and yes, they are just as cozy as the shearling Ugg lining).

Click through the slideshow to find ten pairs of boots that are just as comfortable as Uggs, we promise.

2012 Innovation Quotient Survey Reveals Traits of Four Different Innovative Cultures

Business advisors at Plante Moran and New North Center offer a self-improvement guide for innovation

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., ? Sept. 17, 2012 ? Organizations that make a deliberate choice to build and nourish innovation can earn a significant payoff for their efforts. This conclusion is among the results of the second annual Innovation Quotient (IQ) survey released today by the public accounting, tax and consulting firm Plante Moran and the executive education and innovation training institute NewNorth Center.

Numerous studies have shown the connection between innovation and revenue growth. The IQ survey report released today goes one step further and turns the results of the 2012 survey of more than 550 innovators into a valuable self-improvement guide for the leaders of businesses, not-for-profits, and public sector organizations.

The report identifies four tiers of innovators who demonstrate how organizations can move up the innovation ladder and improve their financial results by adopting the proven practices of innovation-driven companies.

?On average, survey respondents said they generated 16 percent of their revenue from new products or services introduced in the last three years,? said Jeff Mengel, a Plante Moran partner who specializes in manufacturing and distribution and led the IQ survey report team. ?Those who achieve superstar status have innovation-hungry cultures we can all learn from.?

? Accidental innovators: This group dabbles with innovation when a unique idea hits and they have a champion that drags the idea on to commercialization. They were able to generate 11.1 percent of revenue from new products or services, and typically initiate new products, services or processes in response to comments from customers and constituents or a need to improve quality, rather than from a culture of innovation.
? Disciplined innovators: This group establishes systems such as cross-functional work teams, budgets, work plans, and inclusion of innovation in the strategic plan. Their innovation ideas are more likely to be driven by strategy, entering new markets and increasing operational flexibility and capacity. The disciplined innovators generated 15 percent of revenue from new products in the past three years.
? Top innovators: This group generated 21 percent of their revenue from products or services that were introduced in the last three years They embody innovation throughout the organization, starting with corporate strategy, and they had more registered innovation (trademarks, copyrights and patents) and types of innovation (product, process, and systems).
? Superstar innovators: This elite tier adopts deliberate innovation practices, budgets for innovation to meet strategy goals, and publicly rewards people for ideas that emerge. This select group innovates in all methods ? process, product, and service with new product/services in the last three years that accounted for 23.3 percent of their revenue.

This year?s survey asked specific questions of financial, manufacturing, government, education and not-for-profit institutions. Readers of the report can put these statistical findings in perspective by comparing their own innovation experience with the real-life stories of others in their industry. Among the leaders who tell their stories are:

? The global sustainability director at business furniture maker Steelcase in Grand Rapids, Mich., and the executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Greater Illinois Regional Chapter, who talk about using innovation to fulfill the missions of their organizations
? The presidents of two Indiana banks who discuss the importance of sharing ideas and the need for better products from their software vendors
? An innovation consultant from Detroit and Barcelona, Spain, who introduces collaboration in innovation ecosystems as a way to assemble the talent and resources needed for breakthrough innovation
? The CEO of a senior care provider with locations in Michigan and Illinois who addresses the inevitability of change in healthcare.
? An innovation trainer from Cincinnati, who explains the importance of a process that includes rules for when to abandon an idea.

All survey participants will receive a customized report benchmarking their organization?s Innovation Quotient. To see the complete survey results, click here (http://www.innovationquotientsurvey.com/). A webinar on the survey results will be held September 21, 2012.

This year?s IQ collaborators include: Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Columbus Chamber, Community Bankers Association of Illinois, Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce, Detroit Regional Chamber, European-American Chamber of Commerce, Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, Holland Area Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Health Care Association, Illinois Manufacturers? Association, Indiana Bankers Association, Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce, Lakeshore Advantage, Michigan Community College Association, Michigan Bankers Association, Michigan Council of Women in Technology, Midwest Technology Leaders Conference, Ohio Association of College & University Business Officials, Ohio Health Care Association, Ohio Manufacturers? Security helps avoid common omissions and errors in business operations

A flash crash at the National Stock Exchange in India,?brought down?the Nifty (stock index) by 15.5%, and shut down the exchange for a short period of time. Circuit breakers were triggered after a trader erroneously mistyped a single large order into the system -?interchanging the number of shares to be sold with the value of the trade. The incident exposed two types of systemic failures ? the inability to prevent erroneous trade entries of abnormally large magnitude by traders, and the failure of processes, software and systems of the exchange to swiftly freeze trade and shut down the market, once the market volatility threshold of 10% was breached.??????
Most believe that the definition of ?Security? in Information Security is only?restricted to the set of measures an organization uses to protect against malicious activities of external agents and company employees. But, this is partly true ? information security ensures not only the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information; against external threats but also from mistakes, errors, and faulty process and system design.
A good security plan and its implementation will always take into account all the potential misuse scenarios? which have a harmful effect to an organizations reputation, assets or compliance mandates. In layman?s terms- actions both malicious and inadvertent that endangers a business.?
Most data breaches are due to simple acts of omission such as technical misconfigurations by system administrators, use of default passwords and inadequate operational checks and balances. Security, if well thought off and implemented can prove to be a lifesaver by reducing the occurrence of operational risks in an organization?s day to day operations.
The trading firm, in the above incident had to purchase the shares back at higher prices to stay in business. The cost to the company amounted to 50% of its net worth. Had the firm put in place relevant checks and balances to validate large trades, before they were keyed in the system by traders, they would have been spared the financial loss.
On a different note, a similar situation could have been arisen, if a malicious hacker or disgruntled informed employee misused the system to crash the exchange with the execution of a single large trade. ?An experienced security professional would have brought in this perspective through a ?misuse? scenario while designing or reviewing the design of trading processes and software, and recommended preventive controls.
