Blight Gaming ? PC gaming is better the Console

// ]]>

PC vs Console: the final battle

Every now and then the age old argument comes up which is better PC or Console. Every single year the conversation becomes reignited by new technology or games. Of course everyone has their own bias opinion but today I wanted to lay out the undeniable truth. For those of you that wish to insight an argument here are simple ideals laid out that can?t really be refuted. Now you may have your own ?preference? but it is very simple, Computer gaming within the next 5 years into the future will still be the better gaming platform. Unless technology changes or the way content is distributed it will still be PC gaming. I don?t foresee console creating anything to rectify this statement.

1. Online Communities
Now friends lists and leaderboards are all good and dandy cough console cough, but nothing comes close to the sense of a real community found among PC gamers. The ways that teams, organizations, and clans can connect is astronomical beyond just having a website and forums. When I use to play Guild Wars, Star Wars Battlefront and Counter Strike I could just pop in and talk with people I would see on a regular basis for hours. The PC also allows using all kinds of third-party programs and plugins from voice-chat to server-browsing. The way a user can connect to an online community on the PC surpasses anything console can do. Here are just two communities that I know that are really tight knit: NoobGalore? and The older Gamers?

2. Technology
Consoles are in retrospect catching up in this department but they are still lacking behind computers. Some games are being developed only for Computers with the idea in mind of breathless scenery, epic gameplay, and large scale fighting. Even in the software department, the PC allows things unimaginable on consoles. Every new game that comes out seems to have a video of cross platform gameplay comparing PC to console and the winner always is PC. Computers can always upgrade their components when a newer faster part comes out, console has a fixed hardware set up and it?s graphics will be limited to that. The Unreal engine alone is best utilized on Computer games.

3. Modding
Many of the most-played games on the PC aren?t played the way the developers originally intended them to, they are played modded behind recognition. From Counter-Strike to Team Fortress to DotA? and a million less popular mods for every game and genre imaginable, there is a near-infinite amount of free, user-created custom content to be found on the web. Developers release their original tools, after years often the entire Source Code of their game (Quake 3, for example) to the public. Thousands upon thousands of custom maps, campaigns, models and game modes are released every month, taking more time then the developers themselves did on the first game, without any interference from the publishers or developers of the original game. There are whole communities devoted to modding and teaching the trade to other games for more content then the mind can imagine. Modding can keep a game alive way past its expiration date and has done so for many competitive titles.

4. Emulators
PC has made playing an old game on the original system obsolete pub intended with all the available emulators.?Emulators maintain the original look, feel, and behavior as well as only a few years behind in more or less perfect emulation of console software. You can save and load gamestates at any given point and use all kinds of display modes that allow your games to run at higher resolution. I was able to play one of my favorite games from my childhood kirbys super star a co-op fun filled battle on the Super Nintendo, what would take me hours and money to get the system and game is now translated into a small download for my friend and I to play on PC.

5. Massive Multiplayers
Computer gaming was for awhile only single players games with rich storylines such as Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, then the bubble popped and we were given something on a massive scale, the first big MMORPG, Ultima Online. Massive Multiplayer games have revolutionized the industry and completely shifted the business model, the games have given players a real sense of community and belonging(sometimes too much). MMO?s harness rich expansive environments that allow players to dive into this virtual worlds for thousands of years of exploration. These games are the most costly to make yet they reap the biggest reward for developers. MMO?s are not just about finding loot they have also transitioned into shooter with large scale fights crammed into an area more carnage then some PC?s can handle. Console has tried several MMO cross-overs such as Final Fantasy 11 but they did not have the same impact and sustained multiple glitches.

6. Mouse & Keyboard
There are many games that benefit tremendously from the precision of mouse input and a whole keyboard of potential shortcut commands. Mouse alone can be set on the fly transition speeds for gaming with the innovation of DPI mouses. Not to mention that the keyboard?s original purpose, typing text, proves very useful for everything from text-based chats to console commands. The PC being such a text-friendly platform also means that monitors (viewed at closer range and higher resolution) allow to show much more information simultaneously than a TV screen. Speaking from my point of view nothing beats that flickshot of a mouse comparing to the slow scroll of a controller.

7. Digital Distribution
Alright, not everybody likes Steam or Windows Live and consoles are opening up their own solution, already offering a wide variety of games online as well. Nevertheless, digital distribution was invented on the PC and is more and more replacing traditional retail sales on the platform. Nowhere else the assortment is so rich. It?s comfortable for gamers and allows small developers to distribute their games quickly and cheaply. I can easily find the newest small developer game such as Forge

8. Indie Game
Indie games have steadily grown in size compared to its counter part of big name studios. While at PAX I managed to visit many indie games as they are starting to become a staple of gamers. Each year more developers are coming out of the wood work, every now and then one of them pops up on Kickstart. While many of the more popular independent productions land on consoles eventually, nothing comes close to following the developments in real time on the web and being able to check out many of the latest games for free.

Purchasing Real Estate Property? Get The Most For | Information

Within these recessionary occasions, you can find a multitude sell my home in the Mulholland estates of obstacles to having a home loan. The thing is, it?s most likely the perfect time to acquire way too, so don?t be delay. Look at this article to acquire some terrific tips on how you can get your home that you want, in the value that you might want.

Don?t get much more house than you really can afford. Even though you will be approved for a certain amount of dollars does not necessarily mean you ought to take out the complete bank loan. Have a challenging review your finances. Getting a property is an extended-word dedication, and you will be sure that your job and amount of revenue are stable. Since also a dependable career can become nonexistent, it is also smart to start an unexpected emergency financial savings account. Intend on getting out in between about three and 6 months amount of home loan payments so you don?t shed your home if trouble hits.

Take into account an equity loan. In case you are a first time entrepreneur, and you have bought a home that you want to keep for only a short time, look at taking out an collateral financial loan on that residence as a way to buy a 2nd home. As soon as the first home is sold, it will be easy to satisfy not just the first home loan but a good portion of the equity personal loan as well. Inside just a couple weeks, you can purchase and sell several qualities in this way. Always talk with different lenders, even so. This really is the best way to ensure that you are getting the most effective price out there.

Try to level inventory of your home. Acquire your camera and begin every single some images with many shut-ups of residence phone numbers to distinguish where by every group of photos starts and finishes. Be aware such things as strange colors, characteristics, and elements of design. Also pay attention to the environment and location. Then you can certainly amount them.

Find a agent who fits you. When you are on the hunt for the Victorian design house, you don?t want one who may be only considering promoting you Colonial designs. An effective real estate professional will tune in to the clientele well, and work accordingly. Don?t place yourself in a situation the place you sense pushed by a an individual you don?t get along with.

Before you go home seeking, and once you have create an affordable budget on your own, head to lenders and get the best home loan. Doing this before locating a property will ensure you will be backed to the personal loan, and will also provide you with a much better idea of the retail price range you should be seeking.

Financing this may range between promoting away a few of your personal belongings or asking for the aid of parents, friends or any other family members. Naturally, conserving for this all by yourself for a few years is always a good alternative too.

Get your very own persona under consideration when thinking about property types. In case you are not comfortable located in a flat complicated because you seem like other people live in your lap, buying a condo is probably not the most effective prepare for you. Decide how significantly elbow place you require inside a neighborhood and check out houses that fulfill your standards inside an place you really can afford.

Be familiar with the homeowner?s obligations which may come with a new bit of real-estate. Specially in high-priced communities, acquiring property may need a property owner to send to comprehensive rules regarding how her or his home will be preserved and treated. A homeowners? association typically has this kind of restrictions. Prospective buyers ought to evaluation these requirements cautiously well before making a choice.

Will not invest in a property with another person except if you are certain the connection is dependable. People usually make acquiring judgements based on partnerships chances are they find themselves inside a massive financial bind once the partnership comes to a stop, because they had been according to the other individual to help you with all the payments.

When you find yourself buying a home, figure out what capabilities are no-flexible for your needs and communicate this in your real estate agent. As a result you may stay away from checking out houses you have no intention of getting, because they do not have the characteristics you need or want.

When you have fairly recently sold your property or bought a new home, you will in all probability be relocating. Work with a relocating firm to do all of the large raising for you personally. Although friends and family suggest properly and will be helpful, it is best to go out of your valuables at the disposal of somebody who has the proper resources for the position.

Don?t put all your eggs in just one basket when viewing houses simply being sold. In order to buy a residence by doing this, you should look at all offered residences being auctioned and see if any one of them fits your preferences. In this way you can have a back up program if needed.

When looking to purchase the next property, open cabinets and closets as you may stroll by means of. Seeking in these places can display you secret termite injury, water damage, and insect invasion. House owners might successfully mask these items in open areas, however it is tougher inside a dark case or closet.

Inspect for water damage and mold. When looking at probable purchase properties, always look for almost any manifestation of dampness from the home and round the front door and windowpane frames. If the glazing putty has mildew developing on it, don?t stress because it can be cleaned or substituted. Nevertheless, when you notice cracking or broken painting you will find a pretty good chance the home has water damage. This is not to state which you shouldn?t purchase the residence, but you have to meticulously look into any house that displays signs of significant water damage and mold.

When thinking about buying a residence, you should consider just how much area you are going to require. If you have a greater household, you are likely to require more space when compared to a solitary man or woman would. When thinking about the size of your home, consider from the price raises associated with the dimension. A more substantial residence is more difficult to warmth throughout the winter.

Should you be looking to buy a property and easily flick it for the revenue, you require not problem yourself with all the location superiority the neighborhood, because this will have little to no effect in case you are just trying to remedy it up and then sell on the property.

Take into account what you are searching for in a sheet of property and what you wish to purchase when your expense. Scientific studies are your friend to help you make the correct choices in fact it is advantageous for your needs to invest some time in making your judgements. Bristol walks out on 'DWTS' practice and Mark

Adam Taylor / ABC

Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas had a tough time in rehearsal recently.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Uh oh. Seems like things aren't going so well for all-star Bristol Palin during her second stint on "Dancing With the Stars." A new video on People.com of a recent rehearsal shows the reality TV personality really upset with pro partner Mark Ballas.

Mark, who admitted on camera last week that "I know that Bristol is not the best dancer," got some heat from his celeb partner. When he mentions her energy seems off in rehearsal, Bristol didn't bother to hide her feelings anymore.?

"I know you're bummed that you don't have Sabrina (Bryan) or Shawn (Johnson)," Bristol says in the video. (You can watch it on People.com.) "I feel like you're just bummed that you have me as a partner."

Mark was paired with Sabrina in season five. The Cheetah girl was favored as a frontrunner until she was shockingly eliminated in 7th place. Shawn was Mark's season eight partner, and the pair went on to win the mirror ball trophy.

The pro tries to defend himself and make her feel better, but it apparently didn't work. After telling Bristol that he sticks "up for her through thick and thin, always," she starts to tear up.?

"You play this victim role," she accuses. "I know that I'm here, I'm on time, I'm ready to go. I wouldn't be on this show if I wasn't going to take it seriously." The reality personality also points out that he missed a recent rehearsal session.

After Mark tries some more to console Bristol, she says, "I'm just not doing this anymore" and walks out of practice.

"(Expletive.) What am I supposed to do now?!" the pro says in exasperation.?

Do you think the missed rehearsals and drama will hurt Bristol's performance this week? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Pay Inequality Makes for Better Science (preview)

Cover Image: October 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

Income inequality is rife in the world of U.S. science?and it's for the better

TRICKLE-UP THEORY: Pay inequality has been rising broadly among faculty in science and engineering, as shown in this plot of Gini coefficients from 1973 to 2006 (from the National Science Foundation's Survey of Doctorate Recipients). In life and computer sciences, pay scales vary widely at all levels of experience; in engineering and physics, pay differentials are especially pronounced among experienced faculty.

Image: Arno Ghelfi; SOURCE: SURVEY OF DOCTORATE RECIPIENTS, NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION, 2011

In Brief

  • The U.S. leads the world in science by almost any measure. The resources devoted to university research have a lot to do with this success.
  • But the ability to reward high productivity with high pay is key to the success of U.S. research centers in attracting and retaining the best talent.
  • Europe, in contrast, treats its professors as civil servants, with pay awarded on the basis of years of experience rather than productivity.
  • Saudi Arabian schools are trying to jump-start their reputations by lavishing high salaries on visiting scientists, with mixed success.

The U.S. has long enjoyed a preeminent position in the world of science. The nation does more research, publishes more articles that are cited by more scientists and wins more Nobel Prizes than any other. It has also long been the chief destination for scientists and engineers from other countries?many U.S. Nobel laureates are foreign-born.

Adaptable button mushroom serves up genes critical to managing the planet's carbon stores

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? The button mushroom occupies a prominent place in our diet and in the grocery store where it boasts a tasty multibillion-dollar niche, while in nature, Agaricus bisporus is known to decay leaf matter on the forest floor. Now, owing to an international collaboration of two dozen institutions led by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI), the full repertoire of A. bisporus genes has been determined.

In particular, new work shows how its genes are actually deployed not only in leaf decay but also wood decay and in the development of fruiting bodies (the above ground part of the mushroom harvested for food). The work also suggests how such processes have major implications for forest carbon management. The analysis of the inner workings of the world's most cultivated mushroom was published online the week of October 8 in the journal, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"Our hypothesis was that metabolic strategies and niche adaptations of Agaricus might not be present in the white-rot and brown-rot wood-decomposing fungi," said senior author Francis Martin, Head of the 'ARBRE' Lab of Excellence at INRA, Nancy, France.

"Compared to genomes of these fungi, that we previously characterized, the Agaricus genome surprisingly has shown many similarities in gene composition," added Igor Grigoriev, the study's senior co-author and leader of the DOE JGI Fungal Program, "At the same time, our data also supported the view that Agaricus fits neither brown-rot nor white-rot classifications and that its adaptation to growing in a leaf-litter humic-rich environment is not typical of classic wood-degrading fungi."

The ancient Romans used the word "humus" to designate soil and compost, the complex natural interaction of organic compounds from plant cell wall residues. Humus contributes the chemicals that drive the decomposition process through substances like humic acid that serve as a complement to fertilizer, adding organic matter to deficient soils and contributing to overall plant health to foster root vitality and stimulate the growth of beneficial microbial communities in the soil.

Agaricus is the ideal mushroom to study for adaptation and growth in humic-rich environments, noted Grigoriev and his co-authors. They surveyed the genomes and the transcriptomes -- the subset of genes expressed under particular conditions -- of two A. bisporus lines, a commercial strain and related wild variety. This analysis of Agaricus turned up several families of well-known sugar-degrading enzymes similar to the repertoire found in wood-decaying fungi. However, the enzymes in Agaricus such as heme-thiolate peroxidases and etherases predominate in the presence of humus-rich soil habitats, suggesting a higher ability to metabolize complex mixtures of derivatives of lignin and other polymers.

"The ability to use proteins prevalent in soil confers an advantage to Agaricus over other fungal scavengers," said Martin. "To our knowledge, Agaricus had not been shown in nature to decompose wood," said Martin. "Yet, we now see how Agaricus has adapted to growing in this ecological niche. Our understanding of the carbon cycling role of Agaricus in ecosystems is a prerequisite to modeling and optimizing carbon management for sustainable forests."

Unlike brown-rot and white-rot fungi, A. bisporus is a very poor competitor on fresh non-degraded plant wastes like wood but competes well on partially decomposed litter on forest floors and grassland soils rich in humic substrates. The comparative analysis also revealed a dozen other genes that are dialed up during mushroom formation. "Key master switches may be manipulated to control fruiting body formation -- the mechanisms triggering the complex cascade that leads from undifferentiated mycelia, the mass of branching, thread-like fingers, to the button mushrooms most commonly consumed" said Martin.

"Comparative genomics of fungi just got more interesting because the contributions of Emmanuelle Morin at INRA and the 42 co-authors, many of them at the JGI, that led to analysis of the Agaricus genome," said John Taylor, Professor of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley and member of the DOE JGI Fungal Advisory Committee. "The most exciting discovery may be the expansion of these heme-thiolate peroxidases, the versatile catalysts that have an important industrial applications and seemingly allow Agaricus to live in humus, the lignin-rich residue of plants that pervade compost." Such industrial applications include the breakdown of lignin-derived compounds in novel biorefineries to obtain novel high value chemicals.

Taylor further considered the implications of the findings as applied to climate trends. "If the peroxidases do degrade humus, there could be serious effects on the sequestration of soil carbon as soil warms."

Martin pointed out that additional value will be accrued by making the gene map of Agaricus publically available: for identifying pathogen resistance traits and for highlighting wild germplasm collections benefiting the multi-billion dollar industry producing the button mushroom. "The genome sequence will expedite mushroom breeding for improved agronomic characteristics," he said.

The DOE JGI is among leading worldwide contributors of fungal genomes to the public databases, having sequenced over 150 fungal genomes, providing a vital computational infrastructure for such large-scale comparative analyses. The Agaricus genome, originally proposed by Mike Challen, while at the University of Warwick, now at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford, UK., was sequenced under the auspices of the DOE JGI's Community Sequencing Program (CSP), supported by DOE's Office of Science. The CSP was launched in 2004 to provide the scientific community at large with access to unparalleled capabilities in massive-throughput sequencing, computational analysis and other genomic resources for projects of relevance to DOE missions in alternative energy production, global carbon cycling, and biogeochemistry. Sequencing projects are chosen based on scientific merit -- judged through independent peer review.

Reply - USVI Moving Center

As a silversmith, perhaps I can add my two cents here.....this nickel silver is showing up more recently...but a lot of people like handmade or local souvenirs. Nickel silver pieces are often made elsewhere.

Nickel silver is a bit of a misnomer - there is no silver in it - it is usually 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc...it just looks silvery and shiny.
As of today a 12" x 12" SHEET OF 770 HO2 Nickel silver is selling at $50 approx. (0.032" thick)

Sterling silver (same thickness) is selling at $6.28 a square inch!!!! that would be over $900 for the same size sheet as the nickel silver...PLEASE remember this when comparing prices of jewelry etc.

There is a market for cheaper items, but I hope that the VI can still keep up its reputation for fine pieces at good prices.

The high percentage of the base metal frequently leads to contact dermatitis or 'nickel allergy'.

"Allergy to nickel is a phenomenon which has assumed growing importance in recent years, largely because of the introduction of cheap fancy jewellery in which the underlying metal layer consists of nickel. 10 to 12% of the female population and 6% of the male population are estimated to be allergic to nickel. In fact the allergy is not caused by nickel itself but by the nickel salts which are formed under the effect of perspiration in contact with the piece of jewellery piece or watch. " [corrosion-doctors.org]

Sellers of this work usually call it Argentan or German or 'new silver', but it really is just an alloy of cheap metals. If you want silver look for 'sterling' or .999 or .925 or 'fine' silver.

Pakistani girl on Taliban hit list shot outside her school

AFP

Soldiers take Malala Yousafzai, 14, to an army hospital after a gunman attacked her and two other girls in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Tuesday.

By Amna Nawaz and Mushtaq Yusufzai, NBC News

Malala Yousafzai, a 14-year old Pakistani activist who won international acclaim for her work promoting peace, and two other young girls were shot and seriously injured Tuesday, police and hospital officials said.

Local police and hospital officials told NBC News that Malala was shot in the neck and head shortly after leaving her school in the Swat region.?Doctors said they were working in an attempt to save the lives of all three girls.

Malala was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2011 for a blog she wrote under a pseudonym for the BBC.?She also won the National Peace Prize in Pakistan, was honored with a school named after her, and quickly became an outspoken critic of the Taliban in Pakistan and public advocate for peace.

In the blog, she chronicled life in the Swat Valley under the brutal and oppressive rule of the local faction of the Pakistani Taliban, who carried out public floggings, hung dead bodies in the streets, and banned education for girls.

Obama her 'ideal' leader
In early 2011, the?militants had added Malala to their hit list.?

"We wanted to kill her as she was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and more important she was calling President Obama as her ideal. She was young but was promoting a Western culture in the Pakhtun populated areas," Ihsanullah Ihsan, the spokesman of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP said Tuesday.

Malala Yousafzai, pictured here at the age of 12 in March 2009, was undergoing surgery after she was shot twice Tuesday.

The Taliban had made a plan for killing her a year ago but were waiting for an opportunity, he told NBC News.

Yousafzai was initially treated at the Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital, in Mingora, the main city of Swat, but was later airlifted to a hospital in the larger city of Peshawar.

A?police official, quoting other students who witnessed the shooting, said some people came in a car and stopped in front of the school and then asked them to identify Malala.

"Since the students already knew about threats to Malala Yousufzai's life, therefore they said they didn't know her," the police officer said.

Americans ignore 'great risks,' travel to Pakistan to protest US drone strikes

The young girl's stark depictions of daily life in Swat -- as Pakistan?s army carried out a massive military operation against the Taliban in the area -- led her to become the first Pakistani girl nominated for the children's peace prize.

She began writing the diary for the BBC when she was just 11.

In?one posting on her BBC blog, she wrote, "My younger brother does not like going to school. He cries while going to school and is jubilant coming back home ... He said that whenever he saw someone he got scared that he might be kidnapped. My brother often prays 'O God bring peace to Swat and if not then bring either the US or China here.'"
