(AP) ? Jeremy Hill capped his breakout game by leaping the fence dividing the field from the stands at Tiger Stadium and embracing a jubilant throng of students as they celebrated LSU's quick ascendance back into the national title discussion.

Hill highlighted a 124-yard, two-touchdown performance with a 50-yard scoring run, and the ninth-ranked Tigers handed No. 3 South Carolina its first loss of the season, 23-21, on Saturday night.

Hill's clutch runs, showcasing his tackle-breaking power as well as breakaway speed, were precisely what LSU needed a week after stumbling to its lone loss of the season at Florida, where the offense had been stagnant.

"We didn't play like we were capable of playing last week against Florida. The entire offense knew that they had to step up and we made that a priority," Hill said. "At the end, it was a great release and we wanted to celebrate with the students who have supported us throughout the season."

LSU (6-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) substantially outgained South Carolina (6-1, 4-1), 406 yards to 211, but struggled to find the end zone. Three times, LSU settled for field goals after driving at least as far as the Gamecocks 5-yard line, and another drive to the South Carolina 15 stalled on a missed field goal.

But Hill's long score with 5:03 left gave LSU a nine-point lead that proved to be just enough cushion for the Tigers.

The run caused bedlam in Death Valley, exactly what South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier did not want to see ? or hear ? after jokingly pretending to be momentarily confused this past week about the fact there are two Death Valley's, one at LSU and one at Clemson.

"That was Death Valley," Miles said triumphantly afterward. "That was the place where opponents' dreams come to die ? and it was spectacular."

Connor Shaw drove South Carolina for a late TD on a short pass to Bruce Ellington with 1:41 left, and the Gamecocks got the ball once more with 35 seconds left, but LSU's defense held up.

Zach Mettenberger had the latest in a string of inconsistent performances but made enough big throws to sustain scoring drives, finishing 12 of 25 for 148 yards. He had one costly interception returned 70 yards by Jimmy Legree, setting up South Carolina's first TD.

Shaw finished 19 of 34 for 177 yards and two TDs, but was intercepted twice, once by Eric Reid to set up LSU's go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter, and then on the final desperate play by Craig Loston.

"I don't know if he got hit in the head tonight or not," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said of Shaw. "Some of his decision-making was a little off. ... Connor has played beautifully all year. He had some good plays tonight but he wasn't as sharp as he's been."

Shaw also was sacked four times ? twice by defensive end Sam Montgomery, a South Carolina native.

"South Carolina was coming into our house as the third-ranked team in the country and my mom was here to see me play for the first time this season," Montgomery said. "There was so many things to play for other than just the game."

LSU limited South Carolina, led by star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, to only sack by linebacker Shaq Wilson.

"Some guys came out to play but some guys didn't," said Clowney, who had six tackles. "It may be because they were scared. We will address that in practice. We can't come out against Florida like that" next weekend.

LSU tamed the Gamecocks' pass rush by pounding the ball on the ground, finishing with a whopping 258-34 advantage in yards rushing.

"Tonight I realized why LSU was preseason No. 1. They can run the ball and stop the run," Spurrier said. "That was the biggest difference in the game, probably."

LSU's second field goal cut South Carolina's lead to 14-13 early in the fourth quarter, then LSU was right back in scoring range when Shaw overthrew an open receiver and the ball landed in Reid's lap.

Reid returned it to the Gamecocks 22, then LSU drove to the 5 before settling for its third field goal to take a 16-14 lead.

Marcus Lattimore had a quiet night by his standards, gaining only 35 yards on 13 carries, but give the Gamecocks a 14-10 lead in the third quarter when he impressively broke Reid's tackle on a 2-yard scoring run.

Under heavy criticism after failing to produce at touchdown in a loss a week earlier at Florida, LSU's offense was down to only two opening day starters on the line because right guard Josh Williford was unable to return from a concussion and right tackle Alex Hurst was excused for personal reasons.

"To see the offense moving the way it did tonight was a tremendous credit to them," LSU linebacker Lamin Barrow said. "They have worked all year long to get better and tonight fans got to see what we see in practice every day. ... To see the progress that they made was beautiful. We fed off of them."

The unit opened impressively by driving 69 yards on 16 plays, but settled for a field goal after freshman right tackle Vadal Alexander, elevated to starter two weeks earlier, was flagged for a false start on fourth-and-goal from the 1.

The Tigers were moving on their second series as well until Mettenberger's only major mistake ? Legree's interception, which was returned to the LSU 1. That set up Ace Sanders' short TD catch to give South Carolina a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter.

LSU went back in front on Hill's 7-yard TD run on the first series of the second half.

Scientists identify trigger for explosive volcanic eruptions

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Scientists from the University of Southampton have identified a repeating trigger for the largest explosive volcanic eruptions on Earth.

The Las Ca?adas volcanic caldera on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, has generated at least eight major eruptions during the last 700,000 years. These catastrophic events have resulted in eruption columns of over 25km high and expelled widespread pyroclastic material over 130km. By comparison, even the smallest of these eruptions expelled over 25 times more material than the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallaj?kull, Iceland.

By analysing crystal cumulate nodules (igneous rocks formed by the accumulation of crystals in magma) discovered in pyroclastic deposits of major eruptions, the scientists found that pre-eruptive mixing within the magma chamber ? where older cooler magma mixed with younger hotter magma ? appears to be the repeating trigger in large-scale eruptions.

These nodules trapped and preserved the final magma beneath the volcano immediately before eruption. Dr Rex Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, investigated nodules and their trapped magma to see what caused the eruptions. He found that the nodules provide a record of the changes occurring in the magma plumbing right through to the moment the volcano erupted.

Dr Taylor says: "These nodules are special because they were ripped from the magma chamber before becoming completely solid ? they were mushy, like balls of coarse wet sand. Rims of crystals in the nodules grew from a very different magma, indicating a major mixing event occurred immediately before eruption. Stirring young hot magma into older, cooler magma appears to be a common event before these explosive eruptions."

Co-author of the study, Dr Tom Gernon, Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, says: "The analysis of crystal nodules from the volcano documents the final processes and changes immediately prior to eruption ? those triggering the catastrophic eruptions. The very presence of mushy nodules in the pyroclastic deposits suggests that the magma chamber empties itself during the eruption, and the chamber then collapses in on itself forming the caldera."

The Las Ca?adas volcano is an IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) Decade Volcano ? identified by the international community as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated area.

Dr Gernon, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton's waterfront campus with Dr Taylor, adds: "Our findings will prove invaluable in future hazard and risk assessment on Tenerife and elsewhere. The scale of the eruptions we describe has the potential to cause devastation on the heavily populated island of Tenerife and major economic repercussions for the wider European community."

Cameleon ? 2 List Building Mistakes To Stay Away From

Business: Marketing

Are you interested in Internet marketing? Where do you start and how do you make it work for you? Building a solid list is essential to any online marketer?s success. You may have already attempted to build your own list and have met with limited success. Many people are unable to follow through with their list building since it takes quite a bit of perseverance and patience. Simple mistakes are common in list building, and while they may not seem to be a big deal, they can spell disaster for your career as an online marketer. You must comprehend that the building of a targeted list of clients is one of the most consequential business decisions that you make. Try not to get caught up in the money making hype found online. The key is to find subscribers who know and trust you. Once you identify this list, it is much easier to sell your products or services. This writing will concentrate on the mistakes which people often make during their attempts at email list building.

As people begin email marketing and accumulate email addresses from prospective customers, they often fail to remember that all email address are not equal. Your list will include people who will absolutely love the content you provide and people who do not want to receive it. That?s typical. This is simply how it works. If someone feels this way, then we?re fine with that. So the mistake many marketers make is that they trap their subscribers in their lists and not help them when they want to exit. Making it difficult for your subscribers to unsubscribe from your list will only make things worse for you. If you don?t you could be accused of sending spam mailings. The best practice you can have is including an opt-out message clearly positioned at the very bottom of every single message you send to all your subscribers. You do not want to be continually sending emails to people who have no interest in either you or your content. It?s preferable to have a smaller list of subscribers who sincerely want to receive information from you than a long list of subscribers who simply hit delete as soon as your message hits their inbox. You want the respect of your subscribers. Potential buyers need to actually want and be thankful for the content you are providing them with. Targeted subscribers are the key. You want to have email addresses for people who have interest in possibly doing business with you. You should view your list in terms of potential profit. There is no profit to be made from people who resent your communications.

Sending promotional emails to those not on a subscriber list is a common error made by many marketers; this is neither beneficial or wise. There?s no reason that you should e-mail people out of the blue, and you?ll likely be reported for sending out spam.

When sending promotional emails to your subscribers, clearly state your contact information and from whom the message is coming. Anonymous marketing emails get ignored easily and will not serve any purpose. You need your business address, phone number, your business email and any other information that your subscribers and customers are going to need. Further, take all precautions necessary to ensure that your email can not be mistaken for spam. Be very careful how the subject lines of your emails read; any words that might send up a red flag or land it in the spam bin are to be avoided. We tend to feel that anytime people are too hasty to consider using new approaches or ideas in their business that they are basically not allowing for maximum growth and revenue. You should have that perspective all the time no matter how good or bad you feel about it. While visit this site has been used successfully over the years, it may not work with your model or you just do not want to take the time to test it. You will always need to carefully assess anything new, though, and that means you have to base your decisions on research, first.

If you do lose money on some lame method that does not work, then you have learned a valuable lesson and just move on. Actually, one very smart move for newbies is to buy slow and do a lot of reading and asking questions, if possible, about whatever it is. Newbies and those who have a hard time learning from experience of getting scammed will have this problem. We are not worried about what we are telling you about today, but since you do not know us - then that means you have to verify everything. Maybe you have already had experiences in which smart homework saved you some money.

Remember to be extremely thorough when compiling your email list, not taking any part of it for granted, as it is the real power behind turning your business into a money-making machine. By following the correct path, you can prevent yourself from making some basic errors, and you?ll be on your way.

Getting Your Book Published For Kindle | Mike's Life

I have no doubt that Kindle is the future of publishing. I?ve been using mine for over a year now, and I love it!

As a consumer, then, I?m sold on the Kindle. Which is why it?s strange that although I?ve had a book in print for some years, until today, it was only available in paperback, or as a rather clunky PDF download.

Book

The reason is simple ? Amazon?s ?Front end? is brilliant and so easy to use, but, speaking as someone who also sells ?things? through Amazon, their ?back end? is fiendishly complicated and not at all user-friendly.

I recall looking at how to go about uploading my book for Kindle a couple of years ago, and I?m not ashamed to admit that I gave up.

Then I discovered http://www.ebook2ereader.com/ !

I am not exaggerating here, but their service is nothing short of brilliant. In the space of a few days, with less than 15 minutes work needed by me (and most of that was writing my author profile!) I have my book available for Kindle today.

Here?s what they do:

  • You send them the book in pretty much any format, typically PDF or Word
  • They then change it to suit the Kindle (things like indented first paragraphs)
  • Next they convert it to Amazon?s ?Mobi? format, preserving images in colour or black and white
  • Then they create an ?active? menu, which means people can click to each chapter and it also includes the navigation bar so people can jump to various parts of the book
  • Finally they create a cover image for you and send you all the relevant files

The files are sent to you with a really simple guide, which starts by giving you the link the author area and then takes you through, step by step, how to upload your book and your author?s notes.

It couldn?t have been easier, and you need no special knowledge.

The beauty of Kindle publishing is that you set your own pricing, so even if you have a small book, you can sell it at a low price. You also have the option to opt into the Kindle Library service where people can ?borrow? the book and you get a cut of the overall money pool that is generated.

I can?t recommend this service highly enough, and I?m excited that we have several books planned over the next six months, so I will be using it over and over again.

For my Living in Lanzarote book the price was $99 (about ?75) ? I?ve made half of that back with one message on Facebook saying it?s available on Kindle! Pricing varies according to how much work they need to do, but they have a quote service on the site.

I?m very happy to vouch for them.

Here?s their link again: Convert your manuscript to Kindle????

And having read this, I?m sure you want to buy my book, so here?s the link to it!! Living in Lanzarote ? Kindle Edition

Social Innovation: 2012 ING Run is Helping To Fight Against U.S. ...

ING U.S., a leading provider of international financial services, is helping American teachers combat childhood obesity through its social innovation?'2012 ING Run for Something Better School Awards?' in partnership with the?National Association for Sport and Physical Education?(NAPSE). Together, these two organisations are awarding grants to help thousands of children discover a love for running and for creating a healthier lifestyle. Fifty schools from 27 states across the U.S. will receive up to $2,500 in grant money to support an existing school-based running program or start a new one. The grants will help schools introduce students from kindergarten through to eighth grade to the benefits of running and making physical activity a top priority.

Research shows that running is a great physical activity for promoting good health and self-confidence. It qualifies as a "life sport", one where participants are likely to maintain over their life time. Running as a form of exercise helps to build strong bones, muscles, contributes to fitness and to personal goal-setting. Additionally, recent piece of social innovation research has shown students who are healthy and physically active are more likely to be motivated, attentive and successful academically.

The 2012 ING Run for Something Better School Awards will support an eight-week school-based running program that concludes with a running event in celebration of the students' achievements. This social innovation award of $1,000 is given immediately, with additional funds awarded based on the participation in the program. Schools can download unique running lesson plans developed by NASPE to help them.?Rhonda Mims, President of the ING Foundation and head of the?ING U.S. Office of Corporate Responsibility?says, "Childhood obesity is an important social issue. We realise schools need additional resources to help fully engage their students in enjoying and leading healthy lifestyles. We are empowering children across the nation to take charge of their health."
