Home of the Hones: Friend Halloween Party

I have to admit that I have the most amazing friends and neighbors here in California. ?Our little play group had a party for Halloween and it was SO cute! ?Ashley (not me, but the amazing Ashley Alexander (a.k.a. Super Mom)) threw an amazing party for the kids. ?It was full of throw the spider in the web, bingo, bowling for monsters, and tons, and tons of treats. ?Scarlet was in heaven! ?She keeps talking about the spiders too.

Doesn't that look just delicious? ?

The treats!! ?Witches hats and brooms, gummy worms that were so life-like I wouldn't touch them (good job Amber!), delicious apple mouths, hot dog mummies, and other assorted deliciousness.

I wish you could see her yelling, "GOOOOO Cougars!" ?Just like her dad, she bleeds blue. ?Love our little Cougar!

Fukushima Fish Still Radioactive

Purposefully deactivating all security mechanisms and automatic control of a reactor in order to try and get a chain reaction going despite Xenon poisoning of the core isn't lack of luck. Removing all but 12 control-rods from a reactor that needs at least 30 to maintain a negative void coefficient (which the automatic control doesn't allow) isn't lack of luck.

Chernobyl wasn't lack of luck.

In fact, after 1986, all RBMK reactors used somewhat higher enriched fuel (2.4% or so) with absorbers included into fuel rods to permanently give the reactors a negative void coefficient. A fact that is widely ignored by the public.

Also, as the WASH-1250 report pointed out in 1975 - before TMI, Chernobyl and Fukushima - having a large containment with containment spray as was the case with all PWRs as opposed to BWRs built before the 1990ies isn't luck. But was credited back in 1975 with retaining a much larger amount of radionuclides compared to BWRs. That's because of larger retention times, as the larger volume has a much slower pressure build-up and containment spray can remove both iodine and caesium from the containment-air before venting. The accident in Fukushima proved this report to be accurate. (And unlike Japan, many European countries adopted counter-measures in the form of filtered containment vents that can remove 99.99% of Cs and 99% of iodine during venting.)

TMI wasn't luck.

As the WASH-1250 also pointed out, floods and tsunamis ('tidal waves') were known as a major risk that could lead to melt-downs and must be dealt with. Both Onagawa to the north of Fukushima and Tokai to the south of Fukushima were prepared for and hit by the tsunami, resulting in non-events, as the inlets for cooling water were sealed and no vital equipment was destroyed. Strangely enough, they were able to foresee what it takes to prepare for a tsunami, but the Fukushima power stations were not prepared.

Fukushima Daiichi and Daini weren't prepared. But out of ten reactors only five lost emergency power supply - those with Mark I Containments. All others had Mark II containments mong them only reactor #6 in Fukushima Daiichi (current generation BWRs would have a Mark IV or Mark V containment, if they hadn't stopped numbering after Mark III). Those retained at least one emergency generator. That wasn't luck either, but an advanced safety concept calling for two separate sections that could provide all functions necessary for the safety of the reactor. Including an air-cooled emergency generator. No additional air-cooled generators were supplied to any of the Mark I containments, even though the Mark II containment made it plonkingly obvious to anybody that they were needed. And those are cheap compared to a nuclear power plant.

What's worse is that the japanese regulator NISA specifically told plant operators that total station black-outs need not be included in safety drills. Personell could not properly deal with the situation, despite having the necessary equipment to mitigate it by using the firefighting equipment to pump cooling water into the reactor. Those had been equiped with the necessary joints to plug the pumps right in, as the (american) designers of the containment had the foresight to deal with this possibilty. Training would have included knowing how and when to properly vent the containment, without creating a backwash into the containment building and opening the blow-out panels to prevent hydrogen build-up in case of a meltdown - as was done in reactor #2 where no explosion occured.

Fukushima wasn't bad luck.It was lack of training, safety equipment and regulation that had been established decades ago in other countries.

How To Use Source, Citations and FTM For Scotlandspeople ...

OK I've read a fair bit about sources, citations etc and how others are doing it. But I have to say its not sinking into my brain. Perhaps Im getting paralysis by analysis.

I am going to the GRO office in Edinburgh soon and have a big list of certificates I will be getting hold of.

Im struggling with how to enter the sources on FTM12.

For example, a lot of the people in my tree are from the county of Lanark.
There are different Districts within this county (New Monkland and Springburn for example).

So how to go about recording this info. Would it be Source Title is:

1. Birth Certificates in the District of New Monkland in the County of Lanark
2. Birth Certificates in the District of Springburn in the County of Lanark

Then i can use each for lots of certs within the same district/county. I would duplicate these for each type of BMD.

Am I missing something here? I have approx 700 BMDs to do this with at the moment before I even get to Edinburgh, so I don't want to do something silly and double up my workload :S

Thanks for any help/advice

Sharies Miller likely to thrive in Ladbrokes Game On! Bitches 480 Final

Sharies Miller?s track record is marked with excellent podium finishes that predominantly include runner-up ranks and victories.

From September 27 to October 13, the two-year-old young and energetic hound marvellously grabbed three classy victories in a row.

The M. Dartnall trained brindle bitch is awash with fighting spirit and winning momentum at the moment. Despite this, the punters have underrated her and picked Droopys Loner as the favourite candidate.

Both the runners are strong enough and both have achieved a lot in their careers, but Sharies Miller has relatively higher chances to win this race.

The brilliant bitch has won some big events at Hove, Swindon, Nottingham and Monmore. Moreover, she has proved her skills in different formats with OR at the top.

The daughter of Ballymac Ruso out of Little Diva has been winning with regular interval since the very beginning of her career.

The bitch?s OR record is superb. On August 5, she nicely grabbed the title of Coral.co.uk Maiden ? Dup by beating Droopys Jessica with the margin of 2? lengths.

The brilliant sprinter elegantly bagged top spot in the Into Hair George Street Classic on September 27. She was the 7-4 favourite for that race.

The enthusiastic bitch stunned all by winning Coral.co.uk Ladies at Hove on October 4. That victory came with the mammoth margin of 5? lengths.

Sharies Miller?s career best performance was witnessed on October 13 when she beat Britania Richard by 8 lengths to win Ladbrokes.com 480 Div 2. It was amazing indeed.

These feats show that the bitch is carrying a lot of talent that will lend a great hand to her in the coming contest.

However, she will have to be wary of the hot favourite rival, Droopys Loner, who won two big open races consecutively during the last month. First, the D. Childs trained blue and brindle bitch grabbed the title of Colin Harney Northern Oaks and then won its final worth ?1500.

One thing is clear that the two bitches will have to fight neck-to-neck tonight. Sharies Miller will need exceptional courage to thrive. Let us enjoy the heated action. Good luck to the duo.

Boehringer Ingelheim to pay $95M in settlement

(AP) ? Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. will pay $95 million to settle allegations that the company promoted three drugs for uses that were not medically accepted, the government announced Thursday.

The Justice Department said the three are the stroke-prevention drug Aggrenox, the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease drug Combivent and the high-blood-pressure drug Micardis.

The Justice Department said the company also promoted the use of a fourth drug, Atrovent, at doses exceeding those covered by federal health care programs. Atrovent also is used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Finally, the settlement resolved allegations that Boehringer Ingelheim paid kickbacks to health care professionals to induce them to prescribe all four of the drugs. These kickbacks included payments for participating in advisory boards, speakers' training programs, speaker programs and consultant programs.

Thursday's announcement is the latest in a series of settlements with pharmaceutical companies engaging in so-called off-label marketing. In the law enforcement initiative's biggest case, GlaxoSmithKline agreed to pay $3 billion and pleaded guilty to promoting two popular drugs for unapproved uses and to failing to disclose important safety information on a third.

"Pharmaceutical companies cannot market drugs for unapproved uses, make unwarranted claims about their benefits, or pay kickbacks to doctors who prescribe them," said Rod J. Rosenstein, the U.S. Attorney for Maryland. "Drugs should be marketed only for purposes for which they are deemed safe and effective, and a doctor's decision to prescribe a drug should not be influenced by his personal financial interest."

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Aggrenox to prevent secondary strokes, Combivent to treat bronchospasm in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who already are on a bronchodilator and Micardis to treat high blood pressure.

But the government alleged that the company also promoted Aggrenox for myocardial infarction and peripheral vascular disease, Combivent for use prior to using a bronchodilator and Micardis for treatment of early diabetic kidney disease. The Justice Department said that because those uses were not medically accepted, they were not eligible for reimbursement by federal health care programs.

The company also agreed as part of the settlement to impose new internal procedures and reviews to promptly detect any recurrence of such activity.

"The pharmaceutical industry as a whole has undergone significant changes over the past decade and continues to be under intense scrutiny," said Greg Behar, president and chief executive officer of Boehringer Ingelheim. "Likewise, our internal processes and compliance practices have evolved significantly over the years." The company said it has been cooperating with the government investigation.

The Ridgefield, Conn.-based company said it agreed to the civil settlement to avoid the time and expense of continuing litigation but that the settlement was not an admission of liability by the company.

The federal government will receive more than $78 million under the settlement, and state Medicaid programs will receive over $16 million.

The settlement resolves a False Claims Act lawsuit filed in federal court in Maryland by Robert Heiden, a former sales representative for Boehringer. The law allows private whistle-blowers like Heiden to share in any money collected by the federal government as a result of the whistle-blower's bringing questionable conduct to light. Heiden will receive more than $17 million from the federal government's $78 million share of the settlement.

Germany orders recall of some Novartis flu shots

BERLIN (AP) ? German authorities ordered a recall Thursday of some batches of Novartis flu vaccine as a precautionary measure after the company reported the appearance of small particles in the manufacturing process.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is part of the country's Ministry of Health, said there had been no reports of particle formation in Germany or of any serious side effects during the current flu season.

"However, in the interest of risk prevention and consumer safety it is necessary to cancel the approval for certain vaccines, since the formation of particles in the vaccine and therefore the risk of serious side effects cannot be ruled out," Institute President Prof. Klaus Cichutek said in a statement.

The decision affects four batches of the influenza vaccine Begripal and one batch of Fluad. It does not affect the seasonal vaccine Optaflu.

Italy's health ministry banned the sale of four Novartis flu drugs on Wednesday. These included Fluad and Begripal ? sold as Aggripal in Italy ? as well as two others: Influpozzi Adiuvato and Influpozzi Subunita.

Switzerland's regulator Swissmedic also suspended deliveries of flu vaccines from Novartis as a preventive measure.

Britain's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said there was no evidence yet to pull the vaccines off the market but added it was gathering further information on the Novartis vaccines.

The Swiss pharmaceutical company said Thursday it was cooperating with the Ministry of Health in Italy, where the vaccines are produced, and was committed to providing vaccines to patients for the current flu season. There had been no adverse effects reported so far from more than 1 million doses of Agrippal/Begripal and Fluad administered, the Basel-based company said.

"Novartis confirms that these particles can occur in the vaccine manufacturing process and is confident that there is no impact on the safety or efficacy of the vaccine," it said in a statement.

MIAMI HEAT 98: Cole (9), Terrell Harris (12), LeBron James (10), Battier (9) y Bosh (21) -Quinteto titular- Ray Allen (15), Temple, Pittman, Rashard Lewis (6), James Jones (2), Harrelson y Carney (6).

INDIANA PACERS 100: Augustin (9), George (14), Granger (9), David West (15) y Hibbert (4) -Quinteto titular- Sam Young (6), Stephenson (10), T. Hansbrough (6), Mahinmi (10), G. Green (13), Plumlee (2), B. Hansbrough, O. Johnson (2) y Pendergraph.

CHICAGO BULLS 94: Hinrich (8), Hamilton (13), Deng (21), Boozer (24) y Noah (15) -Quinteto titular- Taj Gibson, Mohammed, Belinelli, Robinson (8), Jimmy Butler (5), M. Teague y Ryan Allen.

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER 89: Maynor (13), Sefolosha (3), Harden (13), Ibaka (24) y Perkins (4) -Quinteto titular- Thabeet (6), Liggins, Reggie Jackson (6), Perry Jones (14), L. Hayward (3) y Rautins (3).

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS 107:?Jack (13), Klay Thompson (12), Harrison Barnes (16), David Lee (16) y Ezeli (7) -Quinteto titular- B. Rush (4), Landry (13), R. Jefferson (3), C. Jenkins (9), Draymond Green (4), Bazemore (2), Kinsey (2), Goulbourne (4) y C. Brown.
